Squarespace Email Campaigns: Everything You Need to Know (From a Business That Actually Uses It)
Squarespace Email Campaigns isn’t just something we recommend because we use Squarespace to build our websites—it’s something we use ourselves here at Station Seven. After years of using ConvertKit, we made the switch a couple of years ago. Our main reason? Simplicity. We wanted a platform that worked with our site instead of sitting off to the side of it, and Squarespace Email Campaigns gave us just that—an all-in-one setup that’s surprisingly powerful for most business owners.
In this post, we’ll walk through everything you need to know: why we switched, how to set it up, the pros and cons, pricing comparisons, and some of the features we use regularly.
Why We Switched to Squarespace Email Campaigns
Like a lot of creative business owners, we started with ConvertKit (now known as Kit)—and it served us well for years. But as our business evolved, we found ourselves craving something simpler and more integrated.
We were already running our entire site on Squarespace. Managing a separate platform just for email (with its own quirks, learning curve, and invoice) felt like unnecessary friction. We wanted to eliminate the extra tools, cut down on costs, and stay within a platform we were already comfortable using.
Here’s what we gained when we made the move:
Significantly lower monthly cost (more on pricing below)
Seamless integration with our website
Email templates that automatically pulled in our brand colors, stored images, page links, products, and blog posts
A unified dashboard for website and email analytics
No more clunky form integrations or having to embed third-party code
And best of all, it allowed us to streamline our workflows so we could focus more on our content and less on the tech.
How to Set Up Squarespace Email Campaigns
If you're brand new to Squarespace Email Campaigns, here's how to get started step-by-step:
Go to Email Campaigns in your Squarespace dashboard.
You'll be prompted to choose an email template to start. Squarespace offers nearly 100 pre-designed templates in seven different categories that will help you to get started. You can also start with a blank template.
Once selected, you can begin editing the template and creating your first email. More on that below.
Navigate back to Email Campaigns and you'll see a checklist on the other items you need to complete to get started. Click Create a mailing list to create your first list to send out your first campaign.
This will take you to List & Segments under the Contacts item in your dashboard where you will then click the Create Mailing List button in the top right corner. You will be prompted to name your first list and then you can either upload contacts in bulk or add manually if you already have a contact list. They provide step-by-step instructions for uploading your existing contacts via a .csv file that makes it super easy.
Once you've created your first email list, you can navigate back to Email Campaigns and click Add sender details to complete the last item on your setup checklist.
Click Add Sender and input the name and email you want to show up when someone receives your email. Follow the next steps to verify your email and domain. Following these steps are important to help you avoid landing in spam folders.
While still in the Email Settings window, you can customize your opt-in email (if you choose to require that—more on that later in this blog post).
Once you have completed your setup checklist, you will be ready to begin creating your first email campaign.
Free Trial Included
Every Squarespace plan comes with a free trial of Email Campaigns that includes up to three email sends. It’s a great way to test things out before committing to a paid plan.
Creating Your First Email Campaign
Click Create
Select a layout that fits your message. These are pre-designed templates, but you can customize them.
The email editor will look familiar—much like editing a blog page on your site. You can:
Select the blue + icon to text, images, spacers, buttons, etc.
Pull in existing images from your site or media library
Apply your brand colors and choose from preset font packs
Preview your email on mobile and desktop
Send a test to yourself
Schedule the email to send later, or send immediately. This is helpful for when you want to send an email later that day or week.
Pro Tip: Subject lines, preview text, and sender names all impact open rates. Keep things short, friendly, and clear—and always test on mobile before sending.
Setting Up Automations
Head to “Automations” under Email Campaigns.
Choose your trigger: typically this is someone signing up via a form or making a purchase.
Create your automated email, just like a regular campaign.
Choose your timing (immediate, 1 hour later, next day, etc.).
Save and activate.
Use Cases: Deliver a lead magnet, send a welcome email, confirm a purchase—simple, useful tasks that don’t require complex flows.
Drip Campaigns Tip: While Squarespace doesn’t offer full multi-step funnels with advanced logic, you can build simple drip campaigns by creating multiple single-step automations with staggered delays. It’s not as robust as ConvertKit or Flodesk, but it gets the job done for straightforward welcome or onboarding sequences.
More on Contacts
Squarespace has a built-in Contacts system that works alongside Email Campaigns. This is where all your subscribers are stored.
You can view and manage contacts by going to Email Campaigns > Contacts. Here’s what you can do:
Create new lists to organize your subscribers by interest or signup source
Automatically add contacts from any form, newsletter block, or pop-up
Import lists manually using CSV files if you're switching from another platform
Segment your audience for more personalized messages
Each list shows details like contact source, date added, and engagement history. You can also delete or move contacts between lists.
Pros of Using Squarespace Email Campaigns
If you’re already using Squarespace for your website, there’s a lot to love about their email marketing feature:
Built-in Integration: No plugins, no clunky third-party forms—just clean, native tools that work with your site.
Branding Consistency: Campaigns automatically inherit your site’s colors, images, and overall aesthetic.
Easy to Use: The editor is simple and intuitive—perfect for beginners and busy business owners.
Automations: You can easily set up welcome emails or delivery emails for lead magnets.
Affordable: Much cheaper than most other email platforms if you have a small to mid-size list.
Saves Time: You’re not toggling between platforms or trying to connect tools that weren’t built to work together.
For most businesses just looking to stay in touch with their audience or send out regular newsletters, it's more than enough.
Cons to Be Aware Of
There are a few limitations to know before jumping in:
No Advanced Funnels: While you can build basic drip campaigns using multiple single-email automations, Squarespace doesn’t support advanced conditional logic or multi-path sequences like other platforms.
Limited Font Options: You can’t import custom fonts or match your Squarespace site’s exact typography unless it’s part of a supported font pack. This can be frustrating for designers who value full brand consistency, but it may also help ensure better rendering across devices and email clients.
Overall, these are small trade-offs for many businesses—especially if your priority is ease and integration.
Squarespace Email Campaign Pricing (vs. Other Platforms)
Here’s how Squarespace stacks up against other popular platforms:
Important distinction: Squarespace charges based on the number of emails sent each month—not the number of subscribers on your list. Most other platforms charge based on your subscriber count.
So, for example: If you have 100 contacts and send 2 emails per month, that’s 200 total sends—well within the 500-email limit on Squarespace’s Starter Plan.
Email Analytics in Squarespace
Once a campaign has been sent, you can track how it performed directly in your dashboard. Squarespace provides:
Open Rate: Percentage of recipients who opened your email
Click Rate: Number of people who clicked on a link
Unsubscribes: How many people opted out
Device Breakdown: See how many people read your email on mobile vs desktop
Clicks: View which links got the most clicks
These insights help you improve future campaigns by showing what your audience responds to most.
Final Thoughts

For us, the biggest win has been ease and integration. Everything from forms to campaigns lives under one roof, and we’re not constantly copy-pasting or troubleshooting tech issues.
